Need to be Part P compliant?

All electricians carrying out work in England and Wales, have to comply with Part P of the building regulations.

In 2005, the government introduced electrical safety rules into the building regulations for England and Wales. Because of this, most fixed electrical installation work in homes must, by law meet the building regulations.

Part P states that anyone carrying out electrical installation work in a home must make sure that the work is designed and installed to protect people from fire and electric shocks.

Part P applies to any changes made to existing installations, including any parts that have been re wired. In April 2013 further changes were introduced, reducing the range of electrical installation work that is notifiable - removing some requirements in kitchen and outdoors.

Periodic inspections & testing

Periodic Testing

All electrical installations deteriorate with use and age. They should therefore be inspected and tested at regular intervals to check whether they are still in a satisfactory condition. Such safety checks are commonly known as 'periodic inspection and testing'. Once completed you will be issued with a electrical condition report that outlines the state, test results and any remedial work that needs undertaking to comply with the current regulations.

The inspection will:

  • Reveal if any of your electrical circuits are overloaded
  • Find any potential risks/ hazards that may bring about shocks or fires
  • Identify any defects of your installation
  • Highlight any earth issues

Your electrical installation should be tested every10 years (owner occupied house), 5 years (rented home) or when a property is being put up for rent and before selling a property.

We at Huddersfield based Lux-smart electrics can carry out the above testing, and inspections, as we have shown our competency by passing the all relevant examinations.

Electrical home improvements...

When did you last have an inspection of the electrical wiring and fittings in your home?
Wiring regulations which document electrical safety practices were updated in 2008. Whilst adherence to the regulations is not mandatory, you may wish to consider some of the regulation changes which are in place in order to protect you and your family. So whether you need a FUSE BOARD UPGRADE, or an entire new circuit, house re wired, or just a small alteration, you can trust our expert electricians to carry out this for you.

Upgrade to a new 18th edition RCD protected fuse board, that will make your home safer, protecting you and your loved ones the risk of suffering electric shocks or the possibility of electrical fire. Many homes still have old style fuse boards putting occupants at unnecessary risk from electrical accidents, or they are just not practical in this day and age, ie having to rewire the fuse wire in the dark!

RCD s are 'trips' that switch off the power supply in the event of an earth fault, stopping the voltage and the unnecessary risk of an electrical shock. These are highly recommended and useful safety provisions for equipment such as lawn mowers, strimmers and other general outdoor tools, as well as other outdoor activity equipment involving water.

As well as replacing and updating fuse boards, we can also install new power sockets and lighting circuits, or add additional items to existing circuits. We can carry out full and partial re wires to your dwelling or offices. We can also give you peace of mind by installing smoke and carbon monoxide alarms, burglar alarms, that can be hard wired or wireless, burglar alarms can even be linked to the phone lines so that they contact you or others in the event of a break in.

We at Huddersfield based Lux-smart electrics will be able to cater for all your electrical needs so contact us and we ll be happy to help.
